as Princesse (L'enfant et les Sortileges) 2003, with Monica Brett-Crowther. Directed by Martin Lloyd-Evans, Cond. Tim Dean.

Handel's Alcina (below) was yet another challenge to master.. I never thought of myself as a Handelian singer, but after a few months of working it into the voice and getting to know the character, and a mad couple of weeks trying to remember to match the ornaments with movements, left or right turns etc., I really grew to love it!!  Mad process, but worth all the hard work. Conducted by Christian Curnyun and directed by Will Relton.

Gianni Schicchi  was a great show, conducted by Tim Dean and directed by William Relton. My first role on the Opera Course - good fun!! Above with Annique Burmas as Zita, and Shuna Sendall as la Ciesca!

as Manon (Massenet), june 2002, RSAMD

manon3.jpg

Manon, Manon.. an absolute favourite!! I loved and hated it - only a first year, and a big role to learn. It took me on a rollercoaster ride, which I learned an enormous amount from, especially reg mental preparation and strength. I also had the wonderful benefit of having worked through the role with Madame Ileana Cotrubas during a Samling Foundation master class a few months earlier..Conducted by Tim Dean, Director Will Curley..

as Ilia with Carolyn Dobbin as my Idamante June/July 2003. Tim Dean Conducted and Chris Coewll directed a stunning show, gorgeously designed by Bridget Kimak. My last opera at the Academy before plunging out in the Real World!

papagena.jpg

Does it show I had to do my own make-up? Papagena was a stressful role but so much fun! And Toby Stafford Allen was a wonderful Papageno!

Photographer Christina Ottosson took these beautiful pictures from the performance of L'enfant et les sortilèges at the Royal Opera House, Stockholm, where I sang the Princess and Linda Tuvås the young boy. 2005

And here is possibly the most fantastic gang I've ever worked with! The Falstaff team at GöteborgsOperan!! So much fun, such joy and zest and spirit, most wonderful collegues (especially a fantastic Fenton and friend - Andreas Hermann,), all coming together under the secure hands of maestro Pietro Rizzo - a real musician and amazing person.

Ombre pallide... the crystal wand I was holding was a "real" magic wand, rented and insured, with blue tac at the end of it, so not to let any energy or magic out. Unfortunately I happened to smash it against the floor in a more.. emotional.. passage of the aria on the first night, and it broke in two.. How's that for bad luck? But all went well anyway!

As Papagena, in my Glyndebourne dressing room, oct 2004! What a place to work in - the most beautiful surroundings, fresh air, peace and quiet... And lots of nice people!!
